Der spätere Admiral William E. Parry (1790–1855) trat als 13jähriger als Freiwilliger in die Royal Navy ein und beteiligte sich an den Aktionen der britischen Flotte im Nordmeer. Nachdem er 1818 Kapitän Ross auf seiner Expedition begleitet hatte, führte er selber in den 20er Jahren mehrere Forschungsreisen in die Arktis. Seine zweite Expedition mit den Schiffen HMS Fury und HMS Hecla führte in den Norden der Hudson Bay (Repulse Bay, Winter Island und Lyon Inlet), wobei er auch die ganzjährig völlig vereiste Fury-und-Heckla-Strasse entdeckte. Seine während der Überwinterung auf Iglulik Island angestellten Beobachtungen, unter anderem über die Lebensweise der Eskimos (vgl. Eskimovokabular S. 559–569), zusammen mit den illustrativen Stahlstichen von Edward F. Finden (1791–1857) z. T. nach Vorlagen des zweiten Expeditionsführers George F. Lyon (1795–1833) gehören zu den Primarquellen der Geschichte dieser Region.
