Sebastian Erard (1752–1831), London, Anfang 19.Jh. Bezeichnet: "Sebastian Erard's Patent N 2979, 18 Great Marlborough Street London" bzw. "Maker TO THE ROYAL FAMILY, His Most Christian Majesty the King of France and H.J.M. the EMPEROR of all the Russias" (verso). Holz gefasst, tlw. ebonisiert bzw. vergoldet. Fuss und Kopf mit Applikationen im klassizistischen Stil verziert, neu vergoldet. Resonanzkörper aus Fichtenholz. 7 Pedale. Besaitet. H 170 cm.

Sebastian Erard (eigentl. Erhard) wurde 1752 in Strassburg geboren. 1768 zog er nach Paris und eröffnete bald seine eigene Werkstatt. Er wurde von König Louis XVI. protegiert und baute auch ein Instrument für Marie Antoinette. Die Revolution von 1792 machte seine Arbeit in Paris jedoch zunichte und er verlegte die Werkstatt nach London. Erard widmete sich vor allem der technischen Weiterentwicklung der Harfe. So geht die bei den heutigen Konzertharfen gebräuchliche Gabelscheibenmechanik, die es erlaubt, den Ton einer Saite um einen Halbton höher zu stimmen, auf Erard zurück. Der Instrumentenbauer verstarb 1831.
