Gegenstücke: Portraits von Joseph Liebherr und Clara Liebherr, geboren Seiwald. 1815 (?). Öl auf Leinwand. Rechts mittig bzw. links unten signiert und datiert. Verso auf alten Etiketten bezeichnet. Je 74x58 cm.

Der Uhrmacher und Feinmechaniker Joseph Liebherr (1767–1840) war eine prominente Figur während der Anfänge der optisch-mechanischen Industrie in München zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts. 1802 gründete er mit Georg von Reichenbach und später mit Joseph von Utzschneider (siehe Lot 3037) eine Werkstatt zur Herstellung astronomischer, mathematischer und physikalischer Instrumente, deren Qualität die der englischen übertreffen sollte. Umstritten ist die Teilnahme Liebherrs an der Erfindung der Reichenbach zugeschriebenen Kreisteilmaschine, eine der technischen Ikonen des kleindeutschen Nationalismus im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert.
