Die 1923 in Toronto geborene Miriam Schapiro gehört zu den wichtigsten Vorreiterinnen in der Feministischen Kunst. 1970 begründet sie, zusammen mit Judy Chicago, das „Feminist Art Program“ am California Institute oft the Arts (CalArts). In dieser Zeit beginnt sie auch vermehrt mit Collagen zu arbeiten, welche aus einer Mischung von Stoffen und Gemaltem besteht, die sie „femmages“ nennt. „Femmages“ nutzt Kunst, Materialien und Techniken, die traditionell mit Frauen in Verbindung gebracht werden und kombiniert diese neu. So werden Stickereien, Spitzen, Gehäkeltes , Teppiche und Stoffmuster kombiniert mit Collage, Assemblagen oder Fotomontagen und können so unter einer anderen Perspektive betrachtet werden – sie verlassen die Gattung des Kunstgewerbes und werden der Kunst zugeführt. Aus dieser Kombination besteht auch das hier angebotene Werk Schapiros, das äusserst dekorative Peridot-Windrad.
