Der in Rom in einer Schauspielerfamilie aufgewachsene Cesare Maggi kommt schon früh mit der Malerei in Berührung, wobei ihn v.a. die Malerei Giovanni Segantinis stark beeindruckt. Von ihm übernimmt er sowohl die Thematik der Bergwelt als auch die divisionistische Technik. Um die Jahrhundertwende bereist der denn auch das Engadin. 1912 wird ihm an der Biennale von Venedig ein eigener Saal zur Verfügung gestellt. Als er in den dreissiger Jahren einen Lehrstuhl für Malerei an der Accademia Albertina in Turin übernimmt, kehrt er sich eher wieder der postimpressionistischen Malerei zu, wobei die Darstellung der Gebirgswelt ein zentrales Thema bleibt.
