Die künstlerische Begabung des Norwegers Hans Dahl wurde schon früh entdeckt und er begann ein Studium der Malerei in Düsseldorf, wo er auch seine erste Ausstellung hatte. Später zog er nach Berlin, verbrachte aber jeden Sommer in seiner Sommerresidenz in Balestrand. Diese Landschaft bildeten oft die Kulisse für seine charmanten Portraits von jungen Norwegerinnen, welche sehr populär waren. In seiner Sommerresidenz hielt er von 1889–1914 einen alljährlichen Ball ab zu Ehren des Kaisers Wilhelm II., welcher übrigens einige seiner Gemälde angekauft hat.
Neben Landschaften und Portraits gehörte v.a. die Darstellung des bewegten Wassers zu seinen Spezialitäten, er fügte in seine Komposition jedoch fast immer auch Personen ein.
