Die Heiligen Cosmas und Damian waren der Legende nach Ärzte, die ihre Kranke unentgeltlich behandelten.
Man erkennt die Zwillingsbrüder an den Attributen wie dem Arzneimittelbehälter und dem Medikamentenlöffel, von dem auf der hier angebotenen Tafel nur noch Deckel und Stiel sichtbar sind. Bei der roten Kappe könnte es sich um den mit Pelz verbrämten Hut handeln, welcher der Arzt als Auszeichnung seines Ranges tragen durfte.
Die beiden Tafeln kann man mit dem Umkreis des Malers Bartolomeo Vivarini in Verbindung bringen, der in der 2. Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts in Venedig tätig war. Es ist aber auch ein gewisser Naturalismus zu erkennen - wie z.B. in den wässrigen Augen -, der auf einen Einfluss aus dem Norden hindeutet.
