Das hier angebotene Gemälde kann um 1937/38 datiert werden und stammt aus einer weniger bekannten Schaffensperiode des Künstlers. Seit Anfang der 30er Jahre interessierte sich François Gall bereits für die soziale Wirklichkeit. Er malte, zuerst in dunklen Tönen, später mit fauvistischen Farben Strassenkünstler, Fahrende, arme Menschen, Zirkus- und Dorfszenen, mit Märkten und Volkstänzen. Gall kämpfte sein Leben lang gegen soziale Missstände, Armut und Ausgrenzung. Er half mehreren von seinen Landsleuten Ungarn und Rumänien zu verlassen, nahm sie bei sich in Paris auf, bevor sie weiter nach Kanada, USA, Israel oder Mexiko reisten. Er engagierte sich auch besonders für die Rechte der Künstler und die Meinungsfreiheit.
