Im Kampf gegen Nazideutschland setzte Frankreich auch algerische Kavallerie-Regimenter ein, die Spahis. Am 17. Juni 1940 wurde ein Spahi-Regiment nahe der Schweizer Juragrenze von den Deutschen eingekesselt. Nach einem Entscheid des Bundesrats, der sich auf die humanitäre Aufgabe der Schweiz berief, durften sie die Grenze zur Schweiz unbewaffnet passieren (in der Woche bis zum 25. Juni 1940 waren es rund 42'000 Angehörige der franz. Armee) und wurden interniert.
