Um seine Spanienreise im Jahre 1878 finanzieren zu können, übernahm Hodler u.a. den Auftrag eine Serie von zehn Medaillon-Bildern für das Café de la Bourse in Genf zu malen. Für das vorliegende Werk entnahm Hodler als Vorbild zwei Figuren aus der Radierung von N. de Larmessin nach Antoine Watteaus Gemälde "L'accordée de village".
