Die Auseinandersetzung mit der Tradition setzt bei M. Gubler mit dem Beginn seiner Malerei ein; schon die erste bekannte Landschaft des Dreizehnjährigen ist eine Reaktion auf Bilder von van Gogh oder G. Giacometti, welche er um 1908 bei Besuchen mit dem Vater im "Künstlergütli" gesehen haben konnte. Für M. Gubler musste eine Landschaft umfassend, stellvertretend für alle Landschaften, kein blosser Ausschnitt sein. Nur in dieser ersten Landschaft, später in einigen wenigen kleineren Formaten mit ähnlichem Motiv stellte Max Gubler einen engeren Ausschnitt dar. (Vgl. R. Frauenfelder, Bd. I., S. 23 u. 29).
