Bekannteste Beispiele des seit der Renaissance beliebten Motivs des schlafenden kindlichen Liebesgottes sind Werke von Caravaggio (Ölbild in Palazzo Pitti, Florenz) und die Radierungen von Guido Reni oder Parmigianino. Die vorliegende Zeichnung geht offenbar auf eine ältere Vorlage zurück, auf die sich auch das fast identische Blatt des Britisch Museum aus der Slg. Sloane (BM Inv. Nr.SL, 5224-50, erworben 1753; dort als Umkreis Luca Cambiaso /1527-1585/ katalogisiert) beruft.
