Stellensuchende studieren den Aushang eines Vermittlungsbüros, 1896. Öl auf Leinwand. Unten rechts signiert und datiert. 82x60,5 cm. - Stellenweise kleine Pigmentausbrüche.
Entstanden in H. Meyers Studienzeit 1894/97, bei F. Schider, an der Gewerbeschule Basel.
Ende des 19.Jh. existierte in Basel noch kein eigentliches Arbeitsamt. Es gab jedoch am Totengässlein 3 den "Verwalter des Arbeitsnachweisbureau" und angegliedert das "Öffentliche Arbeitsnachweisbureau", welches wohl am ehesten die Funktion eines Arbeitsamtes hatte. Ausserdem am Nadelberg 4, eine Anstalt für Arbeitsvermittlung, sowie kirchliche und private Anbieter, welche eine Konzession zur Arbeitsvermittlung hatten.
