Der Konservator des Musée du Louvre, Charles Sterling erkannte, dass die Untersuchung von Kunstfälschungen wertvolle Einblicke in die Geschichte des Geschmacks und des Blicks bietet und widmete 1973 einen bahnbrechenden Artikel, den so genannten «Émules des Primitifs» (Nachahmern der Primitiven). Er stellte einen Korpus von sieben Fälschungen zusammen hinter denen er dieselbe Hand erkannte und taufte ihren anonymen Urheber auf den Notnamen „Faussaire pathétique“. Zahlreiche Autoren haben in der Folgezeit das von Sterling identifizierte Korpus um weitere Fälschungen ergänzt.
