Der Schotte Allan Ramsey kam knapp 20jährig für sein Malereistudium nach London und bereiste dann einige Jahre später Italien. Schon nach seiner Rückkehr nach London 1738 war Ramsey als Portraitmaler sehr gefragt und seine Anstellung als Hofmaler von Georg III., der 1760 zum König gekrönt wurde, bescherte ihm noch mehr Arbeit. Deshalb hatte er einige Assistenten wie z. Bsp. den Antwerpener Draperiemaler Joseph van Aken (ca. 1699-1749). Das hier vorliegende Portrait weist grosse Ähnlichkeiten mit den Draperien van Akens auf.
Die rückseitige Beschriftung auf dem Rahmen verweist auf Frau Gräfin Jenny Esterhazy, bei der es sich um die Gräfin Johanna Batthyány (1798-1880) handeln könnte, die mit Graf Alajos Esterházy de Galántha (1798-1880 Wien) verheiratet war. Sie besass eine Gemäldesammlung und könnte die ehemalige Besitzerin des Gemäldes gewesen sein.
