Carlo Bugatti um 1900, (16. Februar 1856 in Mailand; † 31. März 1940 in Molsheim). Hartholz dunkel gebeizt mit feinen Kupfer-, resp. Zinneinlagen und gehämmertem Kupferblech. Rechteckige Sitzfläche und die Rückenlehne mit beigem Lederbezug. Reste von vegetabiler Bemalung und Signatur. Zu restaurieren. Gebrauchsspuren (ein Zapfen an Rückenlehne fehlt). 40x54x100 cm.
Carlo Bugatti führte den Eklektizismus der Jahrhundertwende ad absurdum und liess Stilelemente aus verschiedensten Kulturen in seine Entwürfe einfliessen. Seine Möbel wurden von Vorbildern aus Japan, Byzanz, Babylon, Ägypten und Afrika beeinflusst. Der Designer verwendete ausserdem ungewöhnliche Materialien wie Elfenbein, Zinn, Pergament, Kupfer, Silber und Leder. Als Dekorelemente bevorzugte er kleine Säulen, Bögen, Fialen und Blumenmotive, aber auch Vögel und Insekten. Diese kombinierte Bugatti mit ornamentalen Einlegearbeiten. Zu Lebzeiten hatte der Designer enorme finanzielle Schwierigkeiten, heute sind seine Möbel begehrte Sammlerstücke, die fast nur noch in Museen zu finden sind. Sein Stil ist unverwechselbar.
