Portrait eines holländischen Infanteristen, wohl nach einer Miniaturmalerei des 19. Jahrhunderts. Öl auf Leinwand. Unten rechts monogrammiert. 91,4x72,4 cm.
Provenienz:
- Herbert W. Schmidt, Schweizer Bürger, damals wohnhaft in Java, direkt beim Künstler in Auftrag gegeben.
- Durch Erbschaft in heutigen Zürcher Privatbesitz.
Bei der hier portraitierten Person handelt es sich wohl um Major L.A.W. Eeckhout de Witte. Er war ein Offizier des 5. Infanterieregiments und ausgezeichnet mit dem militärischen Willems-Orden. Das metallene Kreuz, wurde ihm verliehen für den Belgischen Sezessionskrieg von 1830-1839. Ausserdem trägt er die Auszeichnung für 30 Jahre Militärdienst (das Band mit der goldenen XXX), dieses wurde nach den Vorgaben der Jahre 1844-66 angefertigt. Beim Nederlands Militair Museum ist ein Foto von ihm archiviert, welches ihn im hohem Alter zeigt und eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit mit dem hier Dargestellten aufweist. Falls es sich wirklich um Eeckhout de Witte handelt, so wurde die Miniaturmalerei zwischen 1862 und 1867 angefertigt.
