3017. Eggenschwyler, Urs (Subingen 1849–1923 Zürich)

Der Bildhauer und Maler U. Eggenschwyler hegte zeitlebens eine grosse Liebe zu Löwen. Er schuf zahlreiche, lebensgrosse Skulpturen für öffentliche Bauten, u.a. die vier Löwen der alten Stauffacherbrücke in Zürich, den Löwen im Bootshafen Enge, denjenigen für das Kirchhoferhaus in St. Gallen, oder die Bären für das Bundeshaus. Für Parks und zoologische Gärten baute er Kunstfelsen im In- und Ausland.
Da es ihm aus gesundheitlichen Gründen nicht möglich war, seine Lieblinge in der Wildnis zu studieren, richtete er 1891 in Zürich-Seebach einen privaten Tiergarten ein. Er verblüffte die Leute, indem er jeweils seine Lieblingslöwin Grete mit Halsband und Leine durch das Niederdorf spazieren führte.
