Das Gemälde hat Prof. Riccardo Lattuada auf Grund hochaufgelöster digitaler Bilder an Hendrick van Somer zuschreiben können, wofür wir ihm danken.
Die frühe Schaffensperiode Hendrick van Somers in Neapel ab 1622 wurde kürzlich untersucht, vgl. dazu Porzio, Giovanni: La scuola di Ribera. Neapel, 2014, S. 92-116; Abb. 57-138, S. 134-175).
Die Zuschreibung des vorliegenden Gemäldes basiert auf stilistischen Parallelen zu ebendiesen Werken, die van Somers früher Periode (1625-30) zugeordnet werden, wie die Anbetung der Hirten (heute an unbekanntem Ort), das gleichnamige Werk im Hatchlands Park, National Trust, oder Christus vor Pilatus in einer neapolitanischen Privatsammlung (vgl. Porzio, op. cit., Abb. 60-61, S. 136; Abb. 72, S. 143).
In diesen Werken erschuf der flämische Meister interessante Versionen von Kompositionen seiner Zeitgenossen Matthias Stom und Jusepe de Ribera. Lattuada weist darauf hin, dass die Komposition des hier vorliegenden Werkes in engem Bezug steht zu derjenigen von Jusepe de Ribera mit dem gleichen Thema, welches bei Sotheby's, New York, am 30. Januar 2019 unter Lot 57 angeboten und für 615'000 USD verkauft wurde.
