Provenienz:
- Sammlung Grassi, Florenz, bis ca. 1924 (Luigi Grassi?, auf der Rückseite monogrammiert LG), dies gemäss Brief von Julius Böhler vom 22.11.1927. Diese Provenienz ist jedoch fraglich.
- Das Gemälde taucht um 1924 zum ersten Mal auf dem Markt auf. Bode schreibt 1924: „Ein neu aufgetauchtes Bildnis von Botticellis Hand und die Abhängigkeit des Künstlers als Portraitmaler von Fra Filippo Lippi“, in Jahrbuch der Preussischen Kunstsammlungen, Nr. 45, S. 113–116.
- Privatsammlung, Zürich, nach 1924, bis heute im selben Familienbesitz.

- Fondazione Zeri (als Filippino Lippi – wobei Zambrano/Nelson, 2004, in ihrer Publikation über Lippi dieses Bild nicht erwähnen). Das Bild wurde 1953 erfasst.
- Frick Art Reference Library (als Botticelli).

Mit einem ausführlichen Untersuchungsbericht des Schweizerischen Instituts für Kunstwissenschaft vom 25.6.2018, aus dem nachfolgend zitiert wird:
«Die technologischen Beobachtungen erlauben den Schluss, dass es sich im Kern um ein spätmittelalterliches, respektive frühneuzeitliches Tafelgemälde handelt. Die umfangreichen Manipulationen in massgeblichen Partien des Portraitierten und eine jüngere Restaurierung nach 1961 führten jedoch zu eklatanten Veränderungen, die die historische Authentizität fundamental stören. (…) Das Gemälde ist durch frühere Überarbeitungen so weitgehend verändert, dass das ursprüngliche Portrait nicht mehr nachvollziehbar ist. Diese Überarbeitungen erfolgten möglicher Weise nicht in einem restauratorischen Sinn, sondern manipulativ, um die Zuschreibung herbeizuführen.»
