Neben Rembrandt, Ostade, Berchem und anderen holländischen Meistern des Goldenen Zeitalters beschäftigte sich Dietrich schon früh mit dem Werk von Cornelis van Poelenburgh (1594/95-1667) und ahmte seine arkadischen Landschaften sowohl in Öl (z. B. die badenden Nymphen in SMB Berlin) als auch in seinen Radierungen nach. Die Radierung, eines seiner frühen Hauptblätter, entstand im Jahr 1741 (im gleichen Jahr wurde Dietrich von August III. zum Hofmaler ernannt) und die bildmässig ausgeführte, qualitativ hochstehende Zeichnung, mit identischen Massen wie die Radierung eher eine Variante (Kopie?) als eine vorbereitende Arbeit, kann man in die gleiche Zeit zuweisen.
