Arbeitsblatt: Studien eines sitzenden Mannes in mittelalterlichen Tracht in 3 Varianten und der Kopf desselben(?) in 4 Varianten. Die überlieferte Bezeichnung „Studien zum Sängerkreis auf der Wartburg“ ist/kann irreführen. Es handelt sich nicht um die Vorbereitungsskizzen zum grossen Fresko im Sängersaal der Wartburg , die Schwind 1855 im Auftrag von Carl Alexander von Sachsen-Eisenach ausgeführt hat, sondern um Studien zum Ölbild, in welchem sich Schwind fast 10 Jahre vorher mit dem Thema beschäftigte („alle Vorzüge des Meisters, und auch jenen einer vollendeten Technik hat das neueste grosse Ölgemälde, welches er für das Städelsche Institut zu Frankfurt a. M. ausführte...[und er ist] im Begriffe die letzte Hand an das Werk zu legen“ Nagler, Künstlerlexicon, XV., 1845, S. 148; Frankf. a. M. Städel-Museum, Inv. Nr. 921) und zwar um Studien zu der Gestalt des sitzenden älteren Mannes links in der ersten Reihe.
