1711. Widderkopf-Fragment
Römisch, 1.Jh. v. Chr.–1.Jh. n. Chr. Marmor. Zur Römerzeit war der Widder bereits ein überliefertes Symbol für Kraft und Männlichkeit und der Gott Merkur (griechisch Hermes) wurde oft von einem Widder begleitet, Fruchtbarkeit symbolisierend. Dieser Kopf wurde entweder freistehend oder möglicherweise auch als architektonische Dekoration verwendet, da Widder- und andere Tierköpfe ein beliebtes Sujet für architektonische Verzierungen waren. Diese wurden häufig an den oberen Ecken römischer Grabaltäre angebracht. Ca. 24x30x32 cm. Auf Holzsockel. - 15 cm langer Riss über der Schnauze.
Provenienz: Schweizer Privatsammlung, Mendrisio, seit Anfang der 1980er Jahre.
