3047. Alken, Henry Thomas.
Military Duties, Occurrences, &c., &c., by Henry Alken. Collected and Published by Thomas McLean. 26 Haymarket [contemporary manuscript title so lettered]. [London: c.1820-1823]. Gr. 8° (278 x 195 mm). Mit 55 (von 56) altkolorierten, geätzten Tafeln, die jeweils in Holzschnitt- Rokoko- Bordüren montiert wurden. Prachtvoller Maroquinband d. Z. mit Rücken- und Deckelgoldprägung, dreiseitigem Goldschnitt, sowie Steh- und Innenkantenvergoldung. Einbd. leicht berieben, insgesamt sehr gute Erhaltung.
Das wohl seltenste Alken-Werk, das einem fast identischen Exemplar entspricht, mit den gleichen grauen Holzschnittbordüren, ausführlich beschrieben von Abbey (Life 394), wo es heißt, dass neben dem dort beschriebenen nur zwei Exemplare bekannt sind. Obwohl die meisten Tafeln allgemeine Militärszenen zeigen, gibt es einige historisch interessante Tafeln, die sich auf osmanische Truppen mit 'Tscherkessischen Gefangenen' (Tafel 36) und 'Ein Tatarenlager' (Tafel 34) beziehen. Mehr historischen Kontext bietet die Tafel 19, die 'American Bushmen' zeigt, während Tafel 5 den „Tod von Ponitawski“ (sic, d. h. den Tod von Jozef Poniatowski in Leipzig 1813).
In 35 Jahren wurde nur ein Exemplar versteigert. Weltweit befindet sich nur ein Exemplar in institutionellen Beständen. Tatsächlich wurden so wenige herausgegeben, dass sich der Verlag nicht die Mühe machte, ein Titelblatt drucken zu lassen.
