Beim hier vorliegenden Gemälde handelt es sich um Franz Defreggers Meisterwerk "Die Brüder", das 1873 auf der Wiener Weltausstellung präsentiert wurde und dessen Verbleib bis heute unbekannt war. Es war der Kunstwelt zwar durch zahlreiche Reproduktionen überliefert, das Original aber galt als verschollen.
Das Erfolgsbild der Wiener Weltausstellung zählt zu den höchst qualitätvollen, frühen Werken des Künstlers, welches den Beginn der hohen Wertschätzung der neuen Gattung des bäuerlichen Genres markiert, für das Defregger so berühmt werden sollte. (vgl. Gutachten Dr. Hess)
