Eine äusserst seltene Darstellung des christlichen Themas im chinesischen Stil: Das Christuskind liegt in den Armen seiner Eltern, hebt eine Frucht und strampelt mit den Beinen, die Jungfrau schaut liebevoll herab und hält ihre rechte Hand an ihre Brust. Joseph umarmt seine Frau und sein Kind, Schwertgriff und Dreispitz hat er abgelegt. 84x63, gerahmt 131x78,5 cm.
Provenienz:
- Schweizer Privatbesitz.
Es gilt als wahrscheinlich, dass der Künstler dieses seltenen Gemäldes einen europäischen Druck kopierte, welcher von einem jesuitischen Missionar nach China gebracht worden war. Das Originalgemälde, das als Vorlage diente, wurde nicht identifiziert, es könnte jedoch nach einem Gemälde der italienischen Renaissance gemalt worden sein, an das Oeuvre von Raffael, Pontormo oder del Sarto erinnernd. Dieses bedeutende Gemälde ist ein seltenes Beispiel der spirituellen Freundschaft und Diplomatie zwischen europäischem Jesuitentum und China.
