640. Henkersmaske
Mittel- oder Westeuropa. Im Stil des 17. Jh. Vollmaske aus getriebenem Eisenblech mit fünffach vernieteter Nase und innen vernieteter gezackter Zahnleiste. Eisenoberflächen aussen korr. und gebürstet, innen korr. und patiniert. Mit Kapuze aus beige-gelbem, grob gewebtem Leinenstoff. H 25,5 cm, B 17 cm, gemessen ohne Kapuze.
Kurioses Folterzubehör und sonstiges Handwerkszeug des Henkers bildete gegen Ende des 19. Jh. einen festen Bestandteil jeglicher bürgerlich repräsentativer Waffensammlung. Da Originale rar waren, wurde die Nachfrage teils durch Repliken, teils durch phantasievolle Nachschöpfungen befriedigt. Aus England sind Henkersmasken im 17. Jh. anhand von Bildquellen zu belegen. Je nach Ausmass konservativen Aberglaubens, ist jedoch auch mit dem Vorkommen von Henkersmasken in anderen europäischen Ländern zu rechnen. Lit.: s.u.a.
