Provenienz: Schweizer Privatbesitz.

Nach einem Aufenthalt in Paris verspürte der 1870 in Nordspanien geborene Künstler Ignacio Zuloaga das Bedürfnis, nach neuen Inspirationsquellen zu suchen und unternahm 1892 eine Reise nach Andalusien, eine Reise, die entscheidend sein würde für sein Werk. Dort interessierte er sich für Stierkämpfer, Tänzer und Bauern, aber vor allem für Zigeuner. Ihr Lebensstil, ihre Eigenheiten, ihre Sprache – welche Zuloaga lernte und fliessend sprach –, aber allen voran ihre Frauen und ihre Schönheit faszinierten ihn. Er begann auch, sich mit sozialen Fragestellungen auseinanderzusetzen, welche ihn von da an sein ganzes Leben lang begleiteten.
In Andalusien entdeckte er das malerische Dorf von Alcalá de Guadaíra. Damit begann eine neue Etappe in seinem künstlerischen Schaffen – die Periode des «weissen Spaniens». Im folgenden Jahr kehrte Zuloaga nach Alcalá de Guadaíra zurück und liess sich dort für einige Zeit nieder. Das hier angebotene Gemälde stammt aus dieser Periode und stellt einen jungen Zigeuner dar, welcher die typischen Kleider eines Arbeiters des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhunderts trägt (weisses Hemd und braune Jacke).
