Bei der Ruine handelt es sich um das ehemalige Zisterzienserkloster Villers-la-Ville, das südlich von Brüssel liegt und 1146 als Tochterkloster der Abtei Clairvaux gegründet wurde.
Seine Blütezeit erlebte es im 13. Jahrhundert, als ihm ca. 100 Mönche und 300 Laienbrüder angehörten. Im Jahre 1796 fand das Kloster mit der Plünderung durch die französischen Truppen sein Ende.
Das vorliegende Gemälde ist die früheste Darstellung der Ruinen durch Kruseman, andere Versionen sind 1851, 1857 und 1862 datiert (vgl. van Heteren / de Meere, Nr. 68 ,70, 119 und 142).
