The Aurelian. A Natural History of English Moths and Butterflies. London: printed for the Author and sold by J. Edwards, 1766. [Tafeln mit Wasserzeichen von 1794]. 145 S., 2 Bll. Fol. (41x31,5 cm). Zweisprachiger Text in Franz. und Engl auf gegenüberliegenden Seiten. Mit gestoch. kolor. Titel, gest. Frontispiz und 45 gest. kolor. Tafeln, jeweils unter Passepartout montiert. Ungebundene Ausgabe, als Loseblattsammlung in moderner Leinenkassette. Textseiten etwas gebräunt, Tafeln meistens sehr gut und frisch, insgesamt sehr schöne Erhaltung dieses Prachtwerkes.

Harris war einer der herausragensten Autoren entomologischer Literatur des 18. Jh. (Lisney). Er zeichnete nach lebenden Exemplaren und seine Tafeln gehören zu den schönsten ihrer Art. Sie zeigen Rücken- und Bauchansichten aller Arten, zusammen mit verschiedenen Entwicklungsstadien (Ei, Raupe, Puppe), jede mit ihrem bevorzugten Futter. Der Aurelian wurde erstmals 1766 veröffentlicht und durchlief viele Ausgaben. Dies hat zu einer komplexen Bibliographie geführt, die, wie Lisney feststellt, „häufig als erfundene Kopien vorkommt“, von denen dies wahrscheinlich eine ist. Der Text korrespondiert mit dem der zweiten Auflage, aber in dieser Ausgabe sind die Tafeln mit dem späteren Wasserzeichen von 1794 versehen. Tafeln I, III, V, XXXIV, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLII-XLIV sind ohne Widmung, und pl. III hat eine umgekehrte Plattennummerierung.
