Provenienz:
- Wohl in einer englischen Sammlung. Auf dem Rahmen, altes Etikett “Lady Wil...(?) Mugd…(?) N…(?) fife”.
- Schweizer Privatbesitz.
Verschiedene Versionen von Willem Keys berühmter «Beweinung Christi» sind bekannt. Prof. Koenraad Jonckheere hat in seiner Publikation zwei hochformatige Epitaph-Bilder (A70 und A71), die signiert und 1553 datiert sind, veröffentlicht. Dazu sind noch fünf weitere querformatige Variationen (A102-A106) erwähnt, jedoch sind diese qualitativ nicht mit dem hier angebotenen Gemälde zu vergleichen, welches Keys typische Eigenheiten zeigt (vgl. Jonckheere, Koenraad: Willem Key (1516–1568) Portrait of a Humanist Painter. 2011, S. 136-142 und 181-182).
Herr Gijs G. Keij wagt folgende Hypothesen: Dieses Werk wurde zuerst gemalt und hat so gut gefallen, dass der Maler beauftragt wurde, zwei grössere Versionen mit Stiftern zu machen. Eine zweite Erklärung wäre, dass die hochformatigen Versionen zuerst angefertigt wurden und dass der Maler später ein kleineres Bild mit weniger Figuren gemacht hat.
Auf jeden Fall ist dieses Gemälde eine wunderbare Entdeckung und eine bemerkenswerte Ergänzung des Oeuvres Willem Keys.
Wir danken Prof. Koenraad Jonckheere und Herr Gijs G. Keij für ihr Hilfe bei der Katalogisierung dieses Gemäldes aufgrund von hoch aufgelösten Fotografien.
